Kudos from Folk DJ Rich Warren – Host of “Midnight Special” Radio

December 24, 2012

What do Cheryl Wheeler, Pete Seeger, Christine Lavin, Woody Guthrie, John Gorka, Ani DiFranco, Tom Paxton, Jean Redpath, Bob Newhart, Robin & Linda Williams, Mike Nichols & Elaine May, Odetta, Mitchell & Webb, Carrie Newcomer, Big Bill Broonzy, and Susan Werner – and now Nancy Beaudette – have in common?

They and thousands of other traditional and contemporary folk performers, avant-garde singer-songwriters comedians and satirists fill a three hour entertainment that we call The Midnight Special. Nancy and her Holiday CD “Fa La La” are among Rich’s picks this week. “It’s an honour to be on Rich’s playlist – but to be one of his favourites is truly humbling,” says Nancy.

The Midnight Special is an syndicated radio program recognized as one of the premier broadcasts in the folk music world. It is broadcast on WFMT, 98.7 FM from Chicago.

Show host, Rich Warren grew up in Evanston, Illinois, fascinated by radio. He even operated a radio station from his bedroom with a toy transmitter connected to an illegally long antenna, and was ultimately reprimanded by the FCC. The programming? Classical, folk, and showtunes. His passion flourished into an esteemed career in broadcasting and print media. He is a freelance contributor to newpapers and magazines, and reviews folk music recordings for Sing Out!, the national folk song magazine. He is an active member of the North American Folk Alliance and has served on its board.

Fa La La ‘Loaded With Goodies’ – Bill Copeland CD Review

“Nancy Beaudette calls her Christmas CD Fa La La and the warm rhythm everybody associates with that refrain sums up the entire album. Beaudette has loaded this CD like a Christmas stocking with all sorts of embraceable goodies.”

“Solo acoustic number “In Our Home” has as much homey feeling as it does talent. Beaudette creates plenty of texture with just the two instruments. She caresses her vocal notes and presses her guitar notes into something that makes you feel what she felt during the holidays in her childhood home. Many listeners will likely relate to this one.”

“Beaudette offers a lot of holiday sentiment in this release Fa La La. She explores the holiday in all of its various implications, from the birth of a special child to a person who is alone for the holidays after a broken relationship. Beaudette’s voice, guitar, songwriting and her support players are all in top form here. This CD should make an excellent stocking stuffer but it is also a whole lot more.”

“Fa La La” New Holiday CD is Released

October 29, 2012

Moonlit Pond Records is pleased to announce the release of “Fa La La” – a holiday CD by Nancy Beaudette featuring NINE original Christmas songs!

“I dust off these old songs when December comes along”, a line from “In Our Home”, couldn’t be truer for Nancy Beaudette. She recalls singing carols with her family from a tender age, and it flourished into a lifelong passion the year she found her very own guitar under the Christmas tree.  “Fa la la” is a collection of nine original Holiday songs spanning emotions of festive joy, innocence, peace and longing.

Here is a brief overview of the songs:

1. “Fa la la” – a spirited song celebrating the excitement that kids have preparing for Santa Claus.

2. “Silence Tonight” delivers a powerful message of the peace all Mother’s long for when their sons and daughters are serving in the military.

3. “In Our Home” recalls happy memories of Christmas while growing up.

4. “Most of all Baby (I Want You)” is an invitation to get cuddled up with the one you love.

5. “Gold and Myrrh” longs to reclaim the innocence of a child at this time of year, comparing it to the precious gifts given to the Christ child by the visiting Kings.

6. “I think I’ll buy a Christmas Tree” is an acoustic ballad about regaining strength to celebrate Christmas after separation or divorce.

7. “My Silvertone Guitar” was co-written with Louisa Branscomb (of Steel Rails fame), and is a wonderful story about riding the rails to Nashville on Christmas Eve knowing there would be a new guitar waiting under the tree.

8. “Merry Christmas to Me” is a tender ballad about spending Christmas alone after the loss of a loved one.

9. “The Babe of Bethlehem” celebrates the birth of the Christ child and invites us to follow the Star.

Iceland? Really?

September 18, 2012

Yes really. And why not? Iceland may not be on the top of most Artist’s tour list, but it is certainly topping vacation destinations of late. Grindavik is home of the now famous Blue Lagoon Spa, awe inspiring scenic landscape, and majestic coastline. Bryggjan’s Cafe is located in this harbour village and is the town’s hot spot for night life. Nancy had the privilege of touting her Canadiana roots with local residents in September. Icelanders and Canadians have long held a special bond – most evident by the warm reception and hospitality extended to Nancy throughout her visit.

Nancy Showcases At Bluebird’s 30th Celebration!

June 14, 2012

The Bluebird Café turned 30 last week, and an extended celebration ensued with special daily performances from some of music’s biggest artists and songwriters. Beginning Monday, June 4, 2012, numerous homecoming shows, special concerts, guest appearances and events took place at the Cafe, including performances by Kathy Mattea, Crystal Gayle, Vince Gill and numerous hit writers.

Nancy Beaudette was featured in the Sunday Writer’s Night show which highlighted ‘Bluebird Favorites’ including Liz Hengber and Mark Irwin with special guest Tony Arata (writer of Garth Brooks hit “The Dance”).

The Bluebird Café was originally opened in June of 1982 by Amy Kurland as a restaurant in a small strip center in the Nashville suburb of Green Hills. On a fateful night in 1987, a new artist named Garth Brooks performed at The Bluebird and an executive from Capitol Records happened to be in the audience. The executive took Garth into the kitchen and asked him to come by the label the next day to offer him a deal. Years later, Garth says, “The Bluebird is the beginning and the mecca, the end.” In 2004 Dreamworks Records’ executive Scott Borchetta saw 15-year-old Taylor Swift perform for the first time and invited her to be a part of his new venture – a label to be called Big Machine Label Group.

Over 65,000 people now visit The Bluebird Café annually. It has changed little in appearance, character and purpose over the last 30 years. The small stage still offers the opportunity for budding singers and songwriters to be heard. The Bluebird Café is guaranteed to always provide musical “moments,” and in most cases, only 100 lucky listeners will be in the room to let the rest of the world know what it missed.
